As a result of urbanization and economic development, forest cover is decreasing at an alarming rate. This has resulted in climate change and loss of wildlife, soil cover and natural resources. In order to prevent these effects, forest management studies have been done by TIES with community participation, which also serves to generate awareness in the community. TIES has conducted extensive studies on the changing floristic pattern of Periyar Tiger Reserve (PTR) due to the anthropogenic impact of Sabarimala pilgrims. TIES has evaluated the status of Participatory Forest Management (PFM) institutions in Kerala covering all forest circles and identified pitfalls. This has helped develop an action plan and Manual for PFM institutions in Kerala. The State Forest Development Agency (SFDA) had entrusted TIES with this task.
