India’s First Community-Led Bird Study Centre in a Living Village Landscape
The Kadappooru Bird Study Centre is a pioneering initiative of the Winds Park Society and Kattachira Thodu Samrakhsna Samithy, functioning under the Meenachil Meenanthra Kodur River Relinking Peoples Collective. In technical collaboration with the Tropical Institute of Ecological Sciences (TIES), this centre is the first of its kind in India to integrate community-driven conservation within a mixed village landscape of homes, drylands, and wetlands. We offer expert-guided bird-watching walks for individuals and groups. Passionate birders, beginners, families, students, photographers and media professionals are all welcome to explore and experience the wonders of nature with us.
A journey through traditional homestead gardens and groves, ideal for spotting the Malabar Grey Hornbill and the migratory Indian Pitta.
Follow the Kattachira Thodu (trench) to observe riparian species like the Oriental Darter and various kingfishers.
An expanse of paddy fields and streams where you can witness Black-headed Ibises, Purple Herons, and intricate Baya Weaver nests.
The Kadappooru Bird Trails pass through privately owned lands, including paddy field dikes, dry land areas with wild vegetation, and the banks of small rivers and rivulets. As these natural landscapes may involve certain risks—such as the presence of wildlife (including snakes), slippery surfaces near water bodies, or getting stuck in wetland areas—visitors are requested to exercise caution at all times.
For your safety and to ensure responsible use of these habitats, visitors are not permitted to enter the trails independently. All visits to the Kadappooru Bird Trails must be conducted only as part of guided tours arranged by the Kadappooru Bird Study Centre.
We kindly request all visitors to follow the guidance of the authorised guides and adhere to safety instructions during the visit.
